8 x Kai Kristiansen Teak Dining Chairs Schou Andersen Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM

Set of 8 dining chairs, made of solid teak, designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Schou Andersen in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

The chairs have wide curved backrest with beautiful joinery detail. The round tapered legs are splayed inwardly, which creates stunning shapes and shadows.

The seat has been reupholstered in an off white bouclé.

Born in Denmark, Kristiansen trained in cabinet making before studying with Kaare Klint, often cited as the ‘father of modern Danish design’, at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. At just 26 years old, Kristiansen opened his own studio.

With a passion for Math and engineering, Kai Kristiansen has created high-quality wood furniture for decades. Beginning in the 1950s, his coffee tables, chairs, modular shelving and other furnishings were made in the style that would become internationally renowned as Danish modern and boasted clean lines, perfected functionality and exacting craftsmanship.

Kristiansen had his mid-century breakthrough in the late 50s with chair #42, which he made with Schou Andersen and incredible designs sold through IKEA in Sweden.

Kristiansen would go on to work with other leading Danish furniture manufacturers such as Magnus Olesen, Fritz Hansen and Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik, designing everything from chairs and desks to sideboards and cabinets, frequently in rosewood and teak.
