Alfred Cox Walnut Wardrobe Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM

A freestanding two door walnut wardrobe from Alfred Cox. Manufactured during the late 1950s and early 1960s in England and retailed by Heals in London.

Standing on slightly splayed legs and with the original key. Complete with brass rails, internal shelves and manufacturer’s stamps on the inside.

Alfred Cox was a well known British furniture designer active during the mid 20th century, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. His work is closely associated with the post-war modernist movement in Britain, where he focused on crafting elegant, high-quality furniture pieces, primarily in walnut and teak. His designs were characterised by sleek, minimalist aesthetics and superior craftsmanship, often targeting middle-class consumers who desired stylish yet affordable home furnishings.

Cox’s furniture was widely sold through high-end retailers like Heals, a London-based furniture store that played a significant role in promoting modern design in the UK. He produced a variety of pieces, including wardrobes, sideboards, dressing tables, and chest of drawers, many of which featured sculpted handles, clean lines, and splayed legs – hallmarks of mid century modern design.
