1960s Portwood Teak Extending Dining Table & Four Chairs Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM

A striking 1960s teak extending dining table and four matching chairs by British furniture manufacturer, Portwood.

A distinctive example of mid-century British furniture design, featuring beautifully sculpted solid teak frames, flowing curves and a strong Scandinavian influence.

The rectangular dining table features a richly grained teak-veneered top with softly rounded corners, supported by unusual open-frame sleigh legs connected by a central stretcher. The middle leaf extending mechanism allows the table to comfortably accommodate additional guests.

Accompanied by four matching dining chairs, each featuring a gently curved teak backrest, sculptural open-frame construction and contrasting black vinyl upholstered seats.

The coordinated design is particularly appealing, with the unusual curved framework of the chairs mirroring the architectural form of the table’s legs.

Established in 1938, Portwood Furniture was a British furniture manufacturer based in Portwood, Stockport, near Manchester. During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the company produced a range of contemporary furniture, including dining tables, chairs, sideboards and occasional furniture.

Heavily influenced by the Scandinavian modernist movement, Portwood developed a distinctive approach to furniture design, combining traditional British craftsmanship with the clean lines, organic curves and sculptural forms associated with Danish modern furniture.

The company’s more unusual designs, particularly those featuring sweeping, open-frame supports, remain excellent examples of British mid-century modernism.
