1960s G Plan Group 3 Three Seater Sofa Bed Designed By Richard Young Of Merrow Associates

Produced by G Plan and designed by Richard Young in the early 1960s, a beautiful and highly practical three seater sofa which folds down to become a double bed.

This sofa is part of the ‘Group 3’ range which launched in 1962.

Group 3 was inexpensive furniture designed for flats and small houses. Aimed at the young end of the market, it was also modern and well designed.

Freshly reupholstered in a light cream/off white boucle fabric with rattan cane weave sides with the solid teak frame fully renovated and restored.

Richard Young came to work for G Plan who were the largest makers of British contemporary furniture from the mid 1950s to the late 1970s. He is known to have designed a number of ranges for G Plan between 1961 and 1963.

Richard Young’s designs for G Plan were mainly in light oak and as a junior in-house designer he won’t have been paid anywhere near as much as the internationally known Ib Kofod Larsen was paid for his role as a part-time designer. Certainly G Plan didn’t promote Richard Young’s designs in a big way and they’re rarely found in their catalogues . His G Plan designs unlike his later Merrow ones were very understated and were probably too modern for most British buyers , particularly for those buying mid-range pieces who would be more conservative than people with more money.

In 1964 Richard Young left G- Plan and co-founded Merrow Associates. The furniture that Merrow produced were aimed at the top end of the market with their luxurious and showy mix of materials, mainly rosewood and chrome.

Today, furniture by Merrow and G Plan are highly desirable and collectable with both now being known as greats of mid century furniture production.
