Mid Century Hillestak Dining Table Or Desk By Robin Day For Hille Vintage Retro MCM

Designed in 1950, the Hillestak range was conceived when the post war government-imposed ‘utility’ restrictions were still in place so quality furniture could only be made for overseas customers so Hille’s only option was to focus on export markets.

Originally conceived as low-cost furniture, the range was inspired by the plywood work of Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames and proved to be one of Hille’s early successes.

The solid beech wood ‘A’ frame supports a restored and restored Nigerian cherry veneered top surface.

Robin Day is one of the most significant British designers of the 20th century. Since winning first prize in the Storage Section of the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (organised by MOMA in 1948), Day built a legacy of innovation and forward focused design.

As a result of winning the MOMA award, Robin Day was sought out by the cabinet-making firm of S.Hille & Co, and began a partnership that flourished over the ensuing decades. Hille company had specialized in reproduction furniture but with the ambitious young designer on board, Hille completely changed direction and embraced modern design.
