Mid Century Robin Day For Habitat Single Sofa Bed Vintage Retro MCM

A vintage single sofa bed/daybed designed by Robin Day for Hille in 1957. The sofa bed was re-issued by Habitat twice, in the 1980’s and in the 2000's, but only for a couple of years each time, so very few remain in use.

Upholstered in a dark grey cotton polyester fabric, featuring teak sides and metal legs.
The sofa bed has its original removable covers.

The Victoria and Albert museum have one of these in their collection on display which is described as being designed in 1956 and made in 1957, where it won Council of Industrial Design (COID) of the year award.

Originally called the ‘Convertible Bed-Settee’ this piece was specifically designed with young people in mind who often lived in smaller spaces where dual-purpose space-saving furniture was a must and for this reason it won a Design Centre Award in 1957. The sofa has solid mahogany arms and black metal legs.

Easy to use mechanism where back flips over to form a single bed.

Robin Day is one of the most significant British designers of the 20th century. Since winning first prize in the Storage Section of the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (organised by MOMA in 1948), Day built a legacy of innovation and forward focused design.

As a result of winning the MOMA award, Robin Day was sought out by the cabinet-making firm of S.Hille & Co, and began a partnership that flourished over the ensuing decades. Hille company had specialized in reproduction furniture but with the ambitious young designer on board, Hille completely changed direction and embraced modern design.
