A beautiful pair of walnut armchairs manufactured by T.H Robsjohn-Gibbings For Widdicomb during the 1950s in America. Large WWZ model.

Featuring elegant long arms, and tapered legs. Each chair is loosely cushioned with a grey linen cotton blend cushion, and an ivory bouclé cushion.

British-born designer, interior decorator and author T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings was one of the great American tastemakers in the middle decades of the 20th century.

T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings (1903–1976) was a British-born architect and furniture designer took up residence in New York and American citizen in 1940. The design work of T. H. Robsjohn Gibbings is hallmarked as a modern mixture of the classical elements of Ancient Grecian design, and Art Deco design. Robsjohn-Gibbings worked as a designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1943 to 1956. His furniture line was hailed as a triumph by House Beautiful, and his design featured in the landmark Good Design exhibit of 1951 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Through his writings for magazines and books, Robsjohn-Gibbings earned a public following and was established as an urbane arbiter of taste. From 1943 to 1956, he produced an understated line of modernist furnishings for Widdicomb, which included one of the icons of the period. Robsjohn-Gibbings moved to Athens, Greece, in 1966, and created a new line of antiquity-inspired pieces for the firm Saridis. The series turned out to be his swan song.

But his work for Widdicomb remains his most widely known, appreciated for its elegance and generous proportions.
