Robin Day For Hille 1958 Double Sofa Bed Three Seater Sofa Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM

One of Robin Day’s most sought after designs for Hille, it was designed in 1956 and continued to be made into the mid 1960s.

The Victoria and Albert museum have this version in their collection on display which is described as being designed in 1956 and made in 1957, where it won Council of Industrial Design (COID) of the year award.

Originally called the ‘Convertible Bed-Settee’ this piece was specifically designed with young people in mind who often lived in smaller spaces where dual-purpose space-saving furniture was a must and for this reason it won a Design Centre Award in 1957. The sofa has solid mahogany arms and black metal legs.

Rare double version of this classic sofa bed.

Easy to use mechanism where back flips over to form a small double bed.

This particular one was purchased in 1960 from Elders, a furniture store in Glasgow, Scotland on Argyle Street which we’ve got an old photograph of.

They have been in the same family ever since and came to us to be professional restored and reupholstered in a beautiful cream/off white bouclé fabric.

These are the genuine 1950s for Hille originals and not the modern licensed reproduction versions.

Robin Day is one of the most significant British designers of the 20th century. Since winning first prize in the Storage Section of the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (organised by MOMA in 1948), Day built a legacy of innovation and forward focused design.

As a result of winning the MOMA award, Robin Day was sought out by the cabinet-making firm of S.Hille & Co, and began a partnership that flourished over the ensuing decades. Hille company had specialized in reproduction furniture but with the ambitious young designer on board, Hille completely changed direction and embraced modern design.
