Set Of Four 1960s Ercol Quaker Windsor Dining Chairs Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM

A beautiful set of four original 1960s Ercol Quaker Windsor dining chairs, combining one of Ercol’s most recognisable silhouettes with the elegant simplicity of British mid-century design.

Each chair features the distinctive tall, arched Windsor back, formed from slender turned spindles and a gracefully curved outer frame, together with a shaped solid seat and Ercol’s characteristic splayed tapered legs and stretcher construction. The unusually high backs give these chairs a particularly striking profile, while retaining the lightness and refinement for which Ercol furniture is so well known.

Finished in a rich, warm dark tone, the set has developed a wonderful aged patina. There are various marks, knocks, rubbing and areas of finish wear consistent with their age and decades of use, particularly around the legs and outer edges. We feel this only adds to their character and authenticity rather than detracting from them. Please study the photographs as they form an important part of the condition description.

A very handsome and increasingly collectible set that would work beautifully around a vintage Ercol dining table, or equally well contrasted with a more contemporary table. Their sculptural backs also make them attractive pieces when viewed from across a room.

Created in 1920 by Lucian Ercolani a Italian furniture maker and craftsman who moved to East London in 1898. Ercolani moved around the UK making friends and working alongside the founders of Parker Knoll and G Plan. Ercol’s efforts during the second world war included manufacturing tent pegs and contributing to the Utility Furniture scheme. In 1946 launched the Windsor Collection, inspired by traditional Windsor chairs, at the V&A's Britain Can Make it Festival which to this day is still one of Ercols most famous designs. Ten years later Ercol launched the Loveseat, Studio Couch, Butterfly Chair and the Stacking Chair each showcasing one of Ercols recognisable design features, spindle backs, bentwood arms and back, wedged-through-seat legs and light woods such as beech and elm. Ercolani was awarded an OBE for his services to UK design and manufacturing in 1964.
